"I'll take just a regular black coffee." "May I please have a grande, double shot, half calf, skinny vanilla latte, extra hot, and whipped cream." "Could I order a spiced chai tea latte with almond milk?" "Can I have a strawberry banana smoothie with extra whipped cream?" "Ohhhh I need caffeine now!!!! Give me the largest Americano with two extra shots!"
Summer is slowly creeping upon us here in central Nebraska. It has been a long, wet, chilly spring. The busy travel season is already picking up and we are beginning to see some unfamiliar faces that are just passing through our beautiful state. Working at the Coffee Cottage allows you to meet so many traveling Joes. Sometimes, you find the weary traveler who doesn't provide much conversation, because their need for caffeine is just too great. But, after the first few sips their eyes become alive and they're ever so thankful to find "this cute little coffee shop! It's like an oasis when traveling the long stretch of interstate 80."
Then you have the family van that makes it's way to our little shop. The amount of excitement that enters through that door is enough to make even the crabbiest person's heart feel a little bit warmer. The kids sit up on the bar stools and watch with wide eyes as you blend up their sweet treat. Usually, your barista will ask. "Would you like whipped cream on top of your smoothies?" Then the anticipation gets to be too much! They quickly say "YES!" Even during all the eagerness most kids will give a heartfelt "thank you!" Once they get their fruity treat.
We try not to take it too personally, but you do get the travelers who look around and just say "ohh my gosh what do you all even do around here. This is the most boring state ever to drive through." Then we point out the different things to do in the area and things to look for along their drive. Johnson Lake is a busy place this time of year and we enjoy getting to know the different families that reside there during the summer months. Every Memorial Day weekend it is like seeing an old friend when these families return and make their traditional stop at the Coffee Cottage.
With the advancement of technology and the use of Facebook, we are able to spread news and stay in contact with many of our globetrotters that are scattered about the country. Throughout the summer we can almost guarantee that we will serve coffee to someone from every state. The good conversation and stories we hear throughout the busy summer months makes every day unique. We look forward to the upcoming months! Whether you're running on fumes, just looking for your caffeine fix or leisurly traveling about the country to enjoy the scenory. Look for us, off exit 237. The coffee is waiting for you!
